81% of people come to a website via a search engine

This means they usually put a particular keyword or key phrase into a search engine (e.g. Google), which lists (in order), the websites it feels give the user the best chance of finding the information, product or service they are looking for. So how do you get your own website found for something other than your company name?

The “naturally” listed websites (i.e. the one’s that are not paying for Google AdWords) have been placed there by Google’s algorithm.

So how do you get your website listed in one of these natural search listings? The answer is S.E.O.

SEOSEO (or Search Engine Optimisation to give it the full title), is when a web page is developed to represent the phrase that you are looking to be listed for. For example, if you are a decorator in Lincoln, then you would want to have a first page listing for “Decorator in Lincoln”, as this would give you an opportunity of getting more business. Further afield you might want to be listed for a phrase that isn’t “localised”, for example, “DIY Conservatories”, and again you can structure your page to better represent that phrase and give you the opportunity of getting a first page listing on Google.

What we have found with SEO, is that it can (and will) take time to get pages on to the first page of Google, but once they have reached the first page they tend to stay there. This gives you a great, long term strategy to your own internet marketing. SEO is no different to investing in a new piece of office equipment or machinery, you know that by paying more for a better quality product, you will reap the rewards over the longer term, as the item will last longer than a cheap, quick fit, piece of equipment or machinery.

Don’t get taken in by “SEO scams”

People ringing you up and offering an overnight first page Google listing. What they are offering you is a “dead” lead, or a search phrase that no-one actually puts into Google. The problem is (and this is the clever bit), when YOU put the phrase in as a business owner, you can SEE your website has a first page listing for this phrase, however unless YOU are going to buy from YOURSELF, then it is a pointless exercise. So as a business owner you think this is working, yet you know you are not getting any business from the keyword(s). All that happens is that you pay for “more keywords” and your monthly “subscription” to these words increases (but your enquiries don’t).
